2018 – The Year China is Making the Remediation of Drinking Water a Priority

“Remediation of drinking water sources is listed among the priorities in China’s water pollution control for 2018”, according to the Minister of Environmental Protection; Mr Li Ganjie and reported by news sources in China this week.

On February 4^th 2018 an article was published on www.xinhuanet.com discussing the continued efforts that China is making to remediate their drinking water. The article states that:

“The remediation has made headway in the past five years, with a total of 490 related issues discovered in cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt settled, according to the minister.” 

“By the end of 2017, 97.7 percent of cities at the prefecture level and above had set up signs and notices to bring attention to drinking water sources, Li said. Li said that China will work to ensure that over 80 percent of the country’s water meets at least the Level III standard by 2020.” 

According to the Chinese government, 2018 will be an important year with the aim to focus on the remediation of “black odorous water and drinking water sources”. The article highlights the enormity of the scale of works that is being targeted this year. 

“The ministry will push “black odorous water” remediation in 36 major cities and the Yangtze River Economic Belt this year and improve environmental infrastructure, Li said.”

Phoslock Environmental Technologies (PET) has been working with Chinese partners to remediate heavily polluted water bodies in China. PET’s focus will be to work with water utilities, provincial and central government, where possible, to assist in achieving targets in 2018 and beyond.
