Two German lakes have remained blue green algal bloom free for up to 9 years after the first application of Phoslock.

In 2006 The Silbersee was the first German lake to be treated with Phoslock. This recreational lake, near the German city of Bremen, is surrounded by agricultural fields and a camping site. For many years prior to the Phoslock application The Silbersee had been regularly closed to recreational users during summer because of heavy blooms of blue green algae. These blooms were caused by a high internal phosphorus load in the lake. The aims of the application were to reduce this internal load and to prevent the reoccurrence of major blue green algal blooms.

The Bärensee is located in the Federal German State of Hessen, Central Germany and is a popular lake used for swimming and fishing. Prior to the application of Phoslock in 2007, the lake had regular blue green algal blooms due to high concentrations of phosphate dissolved in the water column and contained in the sediments.

Both lakes were treated with an initial dose of Phoslock, followed by a small number of top up applications to ensure continued maintenance of the phosphate concentration in order to keep the lakes free of algal blooms for up to 9 years and maintain good water quality.
