Application to three lakes in southern Holland completed

PET has this week completed the application of Phoslock to three lakes in Southern Holland. The largest of these lakes, Kleine Melanen in Bergen Op Zoom, was treated with more than 30 tonnes of Phoslock. The treatment is the last stage in a multi-year restoration project involving the diversion of external phosphorus inputs into the lake, the application of a sand layer to consolidate sediment and the establishment of marginal plants. The lake has suffered from algal blooms for many years and the treatment was undertaken as an initiative of the local Water Board. The total project, which also involved the treatment of two smaller lakes near the city of Tilburg was valued at more than A$200,000.

Phoslock was initially applied to Kleine Melanen in 2012 as the first stage of the restoration programme.
